When the exhaust brake valve is closed, pressure waves build up in the exhaust port that briefly open the exhaust valves. A piston subjected to engine oil pressure in the exhaust valve bridge keeps one exhaust valve per cylinder very slightly open during compression and the subsequent expansion stroke. By throttling the exhaust gas at this point, both the upward and downward movement of the piston can be utilised for braking purposes.
